Wondering how to Read Google Play Books on Kindle? We know how!

Many of us have a bunch of Google Play Books that we’d love to read on our Kindle. Unfortunately, the process of reading Google Play Books on Kindle isn’t quite as straightforward as you might think. But that’s not the end of the story.

There are two reasons to make it failed. The first one is that 90% of the Google Play Books are protected with DRM. That means you can only read those eBooks with Adobe Digit Edition. The other reason is that more than half of the Google Play Books are in Epub format which Kindle doesn’t support.

Since the reasons we gave above, In theory, we need three steps to transfer and read Google Play Books on Kindle:

Download Google Play Books
Remove DRM from Google Play Books.
Convert Google Play Books to PDF, Mobi, KFX, AZW3, or other Kindle supported format.

In this article, we will introduce 3 easy solutions to do the job.

Part 1. Check if the Google Play books are protected with DRM

Some Google Play books are DRM free and if the books are in PDF format, you can directly read it on kindle. Here is how to check:

First, if the Google Play books are protected by DRM, they are not able to be read or opened by other programs instead of Adobe Digital Editions.

Second, you can check with Calibre, Please launch Calibre (Windows/Mac) and add your Google Play books to Calibre. If its DRM free, Calibre can load the book successfully, If it has DRM, it will pop up and the warning window says that your book is DRM protected. If Google Play books you downloaded is an.ACSM file, you need to use Adobe Digital Editions to download the book as Epub or PDF first.

Part 2: Read Google Books on Kindle with Sideloading Apps

For users who don’t want to go the risk with removing DRM from Google Play Books, we can use a method to read Google Play Books on Kindle with sideloading, as sideloading apps onto Kindle Fire is not illegal in any way. Here are the simple steps on how to do it.

We can sideloading apps to Kindle as kindle fire runs on a modified version of Android, that is we can’t download Play Books app from Amazon Appstore, but we can sideloading nearly any Android App to make it run on Kindle Fire.

By default, the Kindle can only download apps from the Amazon Appstore. So, we need to first allow Kindle Fire to install third-party apps.

Tap the gear-like settings icon at the top right corner.

From the Settings menu, select “Device”

Find the “Allow Installation of Applications” Toggle to “On”:

A pop-up warning note will appear, tap ‘OK’

Now you can side load apps to your Kindle Fire.

Now you can install Play Books app on your kindle fire, Just download the APK of the app from your PC and then load and send it in email. then open the email via Kindle Fire and download the files.

When the item is done downloading, tap the download, then on the next screen tap ‘Install’ and your app will finish the installation.

That’s it! now have the Play Books app on your Kindle Fire! tap ‘Open’ to open the app.

You can open the app and sign in to the Google Account and select the book you want to read.

Part 3: Removing DRM from Google Play Books

Method 1: Read Google Play Books on Kindle with Calibre

If you need to convert directly with Calibre, please refer to this method. If you are not comfortable with this method, jump directly to method 2.

Calibre is a popular tool that is highly recommended for book conversion. It is well known as an eBook manager. But, it also offers a wide range of plugins. Among them, the DeDRM plugin is the most popular one, which provides a free way to remove DRM from, Google Play, Kobo, Adobe, and Kindle DRM ebooks.

Step 1. Download Calibre to your computer and launch it.

Step 2: Download the latest version of DeDRM from GitHub and unzip it.

Step 3: Install the DeDRM_plugin.zip to Calibre. Run Calibre. go to Preferences -> Advanced -> Plugins. And then click “Load plugin from the file.

Step 4: Navigate to the folder of the unzipped the DeDRM plugin, select the folder DeDRM_calibre_plugin, and choose DeDRM_plugin.zip. Click Yes when the virus warning pops up.

Step 5: Restart Calibre.

Step 6: Add Google Play books to Calibre by clicking Add books in the toolbar. DeDRM will run automatically. This can take a few seconds.

Step 6: Click Convert books and choose Mobi/PDF/AZW3/TXT… as the output format and click OK to start the conversion.

Method 2: Using Epubor Ultimate

Using Calibre seems a little complicated, How to read books from Google Play on Amazon Kindle devices with ease? As for as I can know, Epubor Ultimate is the easiest ebook converter software on the market, it is very famous at removing DRM from various ebooks, such as Kindle, Kobo, Google Play, etc. it can convert with good quality and fast speed. Compared with Calibre, this way is more efficient and complete.

Run Epubor Ultimate, When you open this program you should see your downloaded Google Play books all displayed under the “Adobe” tab in the left column. Simply drag the books from left to the right, and the Google Play books DRM will be removed in a second.

Step2: If your Google Play books is a PDF files, you just need to click “Decrypted” to locate the file. However, if your original Google Play Books are in epub format. Please click the button “Convert to PDF” at the bottom and set the output format as Mobi or AZW3. In a few seconds, the conversion will be completed. just click the “Succeeded” word to find your converted Google Play Books.

Tip: Edit Metadata of the eBooks
Often, we will come across books with the wrong/misspelled author’s name or book title, or even some books have no cover. We can easily Edit Metadata of the eBooks with Epubor Ultimate. Just click on the “pencil icon” button, it will pop up a window, You can then edit all the meta info including the title, author, identifiers, date, language, publishers, etc.

Part 3: Transfer Google Play books to Kindle

Now, all the hard work has done, the only thing left to do is to transfer the converted Google Play books to your Kindle, or Kindle Paperwhite via USB connection.

Step 1. Just plug in Kindle to your Mac or Windows via the USB cable.
Step 2. Open the Kindle drive.
Step 3. Drag Google Play books and transfer it to Kindle.

How to Download purchased Google Play books to computer

Just follow the below steps, if you want to download the ebooks you bought in Google Play Books.

Open your web browser and go https://play.google.com/books, log in with your own account. Click on Books > My Books at the left column of the webpage.

It will then list all the books you have purchased, in the lower-right corner of each book title, you’ll find a three dots icon. just click the dots and choose “Download EPUB” or “Download PDF” to download the Google Play books.

What format does google play books use

Google uses 3 book formats: EPUB, PDF, or ACSM.

If the google play books format is in PDF, it can be opened with Adobe Reader DC, Adobe Digital Editions, or any other Ebook reader. and you can use PDF editors to make an edit or annotate the PDF.

If the downloaded google books are format as an Epub. it can be opened with Adobe Digital Editions, and you can play it on most ebook readers like Nook, Kobo, Apple Books, etc.

However, if the books are in ACSM file format, it means the book is DRM protected, and you have to use Adobe Digital Editions to download the real book and use Calibre or Epubor Ultimate to remove the DRM in-order to play the ACSM google play books on other players. And, please follow the below steps to deal with ACSM file format.

Step 1: Open Adobe Digital Editions >>menu >> Help > Authorize Computer with Adobe ID.

Step 2: log in with Adobe ID.

Step 3: Double click on the .acsm file, it will open in Adobe Digital Editions as default, and ADE will automatically download the corresponding PDF or epub books.

Mac: Finder/Documents/Digital Editions
Windows: My Documents/My Digital Editions

Be noted that, the downloaded ePub/PDF files can only be opened and read in Adobe Digital Editions, you need to remove DRM from the Google Play Books before reading it on Kindle, Kobo, Nook, Sony, etc.

Can I read the google play books on nook/Kobo?

If you have Nook or Kobo, you don’t need to remove the DRM and convert it, all you need to is download the book with adobe digit editions and then download the book, after this just connect your device to the computer and Adobe Digital Editions will automatically recognize your e-reader, then you just need to drag and drop the ebook to your Nook or Kobo. And we recommend you download the ebook in Epub format instead of PDF for reading on your Nook and Kobo, as you can take the advantage of reading Epub on your kobo or nook, like reflow its content, and automatically make your ePUB document fits smoothly around the screen, etc.
